Nanostructured Gel Muscles In On The Action

Researchers from the University of Sheffield, UK, Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC) Daresbury Laboratory, UK, and DUBBLE CRG, France, have created a nanostructured gel that can act as a synthetic muscle. The material reacts to chemical changes in its environment by expanding or contracting.

    Sounds cool, but even after reading the article, I can’t figure out what they’re trying to do with this. Is it for creating robotics? Prosthetics? Intelligent drug delivery or surgical uses?

    This technology has many applications in robotics. Instead of having small pistons move arms an a robot they could use this artificial muscle tissue. This is a unique approach because it tries to simulate biology.
