2005 Science Highlights from NASA’s Structure and Evolution of the Universe Theme

2005 was the Centennial of Albert Einstein’s “miraculous year.” It was also a “miraculous” year for NASA. We solved a 35-year-old mystery, clocked matter at breakneck speeds around black holes, took a ride on waves of space-time, and surfed on gravitational waves flooding space. We observed the birth of black holes, the formation of mini solar systems, viewed the brightest cosmic explosions, and saw what could be the light from the first objects in the Universe. We also discovered galaxies buried in dust, and captured an echo of a dead star.
